PP/PE Bi-Compenent Short Fibers

PP/PE Bi-Component Staple Fibers: Characteristics, Production, and Diverse Applications

PP/PE Bi-Co staple fibers are high – performance synthetic fiber materials formed by combining polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) through specific processes. This composite fiber integrates the excellent properties of PP and PE, demonstrating unique advantages in numerous fields. With the continuous progress of materials science and technology, its application scope is constantly expanding.
I. Basic Characteristics of PP/PE Composite Short Fibers
PP/PE Bi-conponent fibers combine the properties of the two polymers, PP and PE. PP has good mechanical properties, chemical corrosion resistance, a relatively high melting point (about 160 – 170°C), and excellent processing performance. PE is known for its outstanding flexibility, low – temperature resistance (it can maintain good performance in an environment of – 40°C to – 70°C), and electrical insulation. After compounding, the short fibers possess characteristics such as high strength, high toughness, wear resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, and good processing and molding properties. Their density usually ranges from 0.9 – 0.95g/cm³, which is lower than that of traditional natural fibers and some synthetic fibers. This gives it significant advantages in some application scenarios with strict weight requirements.
From a micro – structural perspective, the internal structure of PP/PE composite short fibers shows a state of phase separation and interweaving of PP and PE. This unique structure endows the fibers with multiple functions. For example, in terms of mechanical properties, PP provides high rigidity and strength, while PE enhances the flexibility and impact resistance of the fibers. In terms of chemical properties, the combination of the two expands the range of chemical corrosion resistance of the fibers. At the same time, due to the different crystallinities of PP and PE, the crystallization behavior of the composite fibers is more complex, which has an important impact on their physical properties and processing performance.
II. Production Process
(I) Raw Material Preparation
The first step in producing PP/PE composite short fibers is to select suitable PP and PE raw materials. For PP, homopolymer or copolymer polypropylene with a melt flow rate (MFR) between 2 – 10g/10min is generally chosen. The MFR value affects the fluidity of PP during the processing, thus influencing the forming quality of the fibers. For PE, linear low – density polyethylene (LLDPE) or high – density polyethylene (HDPE) is usually selected. LLDPE has good flexibility and tensile strength, while HDPE has higher rigidity and wear resistance. The appropriate PE variety is chosen according to different product requirements.
Before use, PP and PE raw materials need to be dried to remove moisture. The presence of moisture can cause hydrolysis of the polymer during processing, reducing the performance of the fibers. For example, it can decrease the strength of the fibers and cause surface defects. The drying process is usually carried out in a dehumidifying dryer at a temperature of 80 – 100°C. The drying time depends on the water content of the raw materials and the performance of the drying equipment, generally ranging from 2 – 4 hours.
(II) Blending and Modification
To further improve the performance of PP/PE composite short fibers, various additives such as antioxidants, UV stabilizers, and flame retardants are usually added to the raw materials. Antioxidants can prevent the fibers from degrading due to oxidation during processing and use, extending the service life of the fibers. UV stabilizers can enhance the fiber’s resistance to ultraviolet light, making it suitable for outdoor applications. Flame retardants endow the fibers with flame – retardant properties, meeting the requirements of some fields with strict fire – safety regulations.
The dried PP, PE raw materials, and additives are added to a high – speed mixer in a certain proportion for thorough mixing. During the mixing process, the high – speed rotating mixing blades enable the materials to be uniformly dispersed in a short time, ensuring that the additives are evenly distributed in the PP and PE matrix. The mixing time is generally 10 – 20 minutes, and the mixing temperature is controlled at room temperature.
(III) Melt Extrusion
The blended materials are conveyed to a twin – screw extruder for melt extrusion through a feeding device. The twin – screw extruder has good material conveying and mixing capabilities, allowing the materials to be fully melted and plasticized under the rotation of the screws. The temperature setting of the extruder is crucial. Generally, it is divided into multiple heating zones. The temperature gradually increases from the hopper end to the die head to ensure uniform melting of the materials. The initial temperature is usually set at 150 – 170°C, and the temperature near the die head can reach 220 – 250°C.
In the extruder, under the shear force and friction of the screws, the materials not only achieve melting and plasticization but also undergo molecular chain orientation and further mixing. The plasticized materials become a melt with good fluidity and are extruded from the die head of the extruder to form continuous filaments. The shape and size of the die head determine the cross – sectional shape and specifications of the fibers. Common cross – sectional shapes of fibers include circular and special – shaped (such as trilobal, cross – shaped, etc.). Different shapes endow the fibers with different performance characteristics. For example, special – shaped fibers have better covering properties, bulkiness, and moisture – guiding properties.
(IV) Cooling and Forming
The high – temperature melt filaments extruded from the die head need to be cooled and solidified rapidly to form a stable fiber shape. The cooling methods mainly include air cooling and water cooling. Air cooling usually involves directly blowing cold air onto the filaments. The cooling rate is relatively slow, but the equipment is simple and the cost is low, which is suitable for occasions where the cooling requirements for fibers are not high. Water cooling is to immerse the filaments directly in cooling water. The cooling rate is fast, which can make the fibers solidify rapidly, forming a uniform structure and improving the strength and surface quality of the fibers. The cooling water temperature is generally controlled at 15 – 30°C, and the cooling time depends on the specifications of the fibers and the cooling method, usually ranging from a few seconds to tens of seconds.
During the cooling process, the fibers will shrink and crystallize. The degree of crystallinity directly affects the physical properties of the fibers. To control the crystallinity of the fibers, a certain tensile force is sometimes applied to the filaments during the cooling process. Stretching can promote the orientation of molecular chains and improve the strength and modulus of the fibers. The draw ratio is generally between 3 – 6 times, and the specific value is adjusted according to the performance requirements of the products.
(V) Drawing and Orientation
Although the cooled and formed fibers have a certain shape and strength, the arrangement of molecular chains is not regular enough, and the performance of the fibers needs to be further improved. Drawing and orientation is to apply a tensile force to the fibers to align the molecular chains along the axial direction of the fibers, thereby improving the strength, modulus, wear resistance, and other properties of the fibers. The drawing process is usually carried out on a drawing machine, and a multi – stage drawing method is adopted to gradually increase the draw ratio.
The drawing temperature has an important impact on the drawing performance and structure of the fibers. Generally, the drawing temperature should be controlled between the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the melting point (Tm). For PP/PE composite short fibers, the drawing temperature is usually between 80 – 120°C. In this temperature range, the fibers have good plasticity and can undergo plastic deformation under the action of the tensile force, realizing the orientation of molecular chains. The drawing speed is also a key parameter. If the drawing speed is too fast, stress concentration will occur inside the fibers, and the fibers are prone to breakage. If the drawing speed is too slow, it will affect the production efficiency. The drawing speed is generally controlled between 50 – 500m/min.
(VI) Crimping Treatment
To increase the cohesion between fibers and improve the spinnability and processing performance of the fibers, the drawn fibers need to be crimped. Crimping is to apply mechanical force to the fibers through a crimping machine to form regular crimps. The crimping machine usually uses hot – roll crimping or mechanical crimping methods. Hot – roll crimping uses heated crimping rolls to crimp the fibers. During the crimping process, the fibers are softened by heat and are more likely to form stable crimps. Mechanical crimping is to extrude and bend the fibers through a mechanical device to achieve the crimping effect.
The crimp degree is an important indicator to measure the crimping degree of fibers, usually expressed by the number of crimps, that is, the number of crimps of the fibers per unit length (such as 1cm). The number of crimps of PP/PE composite short fibers is usually controlled between 3 – 8 per cm. The crimp degree is adjusted according to the application fields of the fibers. For example, fibers used in the textile field have a higher crimp degree to improve the spinnability of the fibers and the hand feel of the fabric. Fibers used in the non – woven fabric field have a relatively lower crimp degree to ensure the uniform distribution of the fibers in the non – woven fabric and the strength of the product.
(VII) Cutting
The crimped fibers need to be cut into short fibers of a certain length according to different application requirements. The cutting process is carried out on a cutting machine. The cutting machine usually uses rotating blades to cut the continuous fiber bundles. The cutting length can be adjusted according to customer requirements. Common cutting lengths include 32mm, 38mm, 51mm, etc., which are suitable for different textile processes and products.
During the cutting process, it is necessary to ensure the consistency of the cutting length to ensure the stability of product quality. After cutting, the fibers are screened and packaged to become the final PP/PE composite short – fiber products. The packaging method generally uses woven bags or plastic bags. The weight of each bag depends on market demand and transportation requirements, usually 25kg or 50kg.
